Research Spotlight #2: Managing Resources in the (Edge) Cloud

Our first CleanSky research spotlight focused on placing virtual machines (VMs) in the cloud. However, in many cases, customers do not rent a single VM from the service provider (that then needs to be placed appropriately), but rather require a set of VMs to run their services, and these VMs are interconnected and need to be properly sized. Additionally, one major trend in both industry and academia has been the introduction of edge computing, in which resources (e.g. VMs) are brought closer to the customer to facilitate lower latencies and better quality of experience for the user. The combination of these two scenarios brings along a variety of research questions, some of which CleanSky has addressed in a series of peer-reviewed research papers. The 3rd CleanSky Summer School has been held

From September 4th through 8th the CleanSky consortium has met in Beijing, China, to host its third annual summer school. Under the theme “Advanced Methods and Theories for Scalable Cloud Systems” the program featured distinguished international experts as well as internal consortium speakers. This year, the summer school tightly integrated industry experts into the program. Highlights included a full-day tutorial from Intel on their scalable packet processing library DPDK, insights into big data research with the Chinese powerhouse Tencent, as well as a presentation of Huawei on their latest research. At the same time, CleanSky held the 3rd annual training workshop, including a visit to a startup incubator company on campus in Beijing.

The 3rd CleanSky Summer School will be held in Beijing, China, this fall. From September 4-8, we invite students and researchers alike to join us for a full week of lessons on Advanced Methods and Theories for Scalable Cloud Systems. The summer school will be hosted by Tsinghua University, and more detailed information will follow!

Program of 3rd CleanSky ITN Conference available

On March 13th 2017, the third CleanSky ITN conference will kick off. The two-day program features three distinguished keynote speakers, six guest talks, and presentations of CleanSky fellows reporting on their latest work. The conference will be co-located with NetSys 2017. Registrations are still possible via the NetSys website.

After we have completed the introduction of our fellows, we now want to introduce their work, too. We will do so in a number of ‘research spotlights’ that feature core topics of CleanSky ITN and how fellows are contributing to those. CleanSky Researchers act as Ambassadors for Marie-Curie Actions

Recently, our two fellows Besmir Tola (ESR9) and Yordanos Tibebu Woldeyohannes (ESR3) have been representing CleanSky as Marie Curie Ambassadors at the NTNU Trondheim Researcher Night 2016. In particular, they promoted the possibilities of doing research within the EU Marie Curie Actions. This post’s picture taken during this event features Besmir in the white shirt on the left!

Goodbye Helsinki, hello Trondheim!

Last Friday, the second CleanSky ITN summer school came to an end. The whole network including all full and associate partners as well as all fellows gathered in Helsinki for a series of very interesting lectures on green datacenter networking. Please visit the summer school website for more information.

On the final day, the second CleanSky ITN conference was announced to be held in Trondheim, Norway. In August, all fellows will travel there to present their most recent work. All further information is listed on this page.
